For the 2022 International Society of Typographic Designers (ISTD) membership application, candidates were tasked with crafting industry-leading typographically driven narratives. The project I chose addressed the critical yet often overlooked issue of skin cancer prevalence in Black communities.
For my research I synthesized scientific cancer research and personal accounts, creating a compelling, multifaceted narrative. My design concept drew parallels between the subtle progression of skin cancer and nuanced typographic and photographic manipulations. This approach was further reinforced through the thoughtful selection of materials that evoked the textures and tones of Black skin.
The final deliverable took the form of an 'experiential' book, designed to engage readers in an active exploration of its content binding and pages. This interactive element served as a metaphor for the vigilance required in skin cancer detection, encouraging a careful examination of the book's minutiae to uncover embedded messages.
The project's innovative approach to storytelling through typography, coupled with its focus on an underrepresented health issue, resonated with the ISTD evaluation committee. My submission was accepted and I was awarded ISTD membership—a significant professional accomplishment in the field of typographic design.
